Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Costa Rica's Guanacaste province is the country's Pacific Northwest coast — known for the Peninsula Papagayo, the calm warm water of the Gulf of Papagayo, and a year-round dry tropical climate that distinguishes it from Costa Rica's rainier southern Pacific and Caribbean coasts. December through April is the peak dry season; even in green season, mornings tend to stay sunny.

The Peninsula Papagayo is a 2,300-acre master-planned development that anchors the region's luxury market. Within it: the Four Seasons, the Andaz, and now St. Regis residences, alongside two Arnold Palmer-designed golf courses, multiple beach clubs, and twenty-five distinct beaches. The development is gated, security is tight, and golf carts handle most local circulation.

Beyond the Peninsula, Guanacaste includes Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa, Playa Conchal, and dozens of smaller Pacific surf and beach towns. Wildlife is abundant — howler monkeys in the canopy, sea turtles nesting at Playa Grande, more bird species per acre than nearly anywhere in the hemisphere — and the ecosystems are protected through a strong national park system.

GoForth's two homes here both sit within the Peninsula Papagayo: a brand-new St. Regis branded residence and Bahía Papagayo, a contemporary three-bedroom turnkey home in the same gated community. Liberia International Airport (LIR) is 20–35 minutes from each, with direct flights from Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Newark, Chicago, and several Canadian hubs.

Costa Rica's "pura vida" reputation isn't marketing — it's a real cultural difference that owners feel from the first arrival. Combine that with the political stability the country is known for in the region, the absence of an army (abolished in 1948), and a healthcare system that ranks among Central America's best, and Guanacaste becomes one of the most operationally easy international ownership choices on the GoForth map.

Local Guide

Things to Do

  • Snorkel and dive the Gulf of Papagayo

Calm warm water, accessible reefs, and one of the most reliable Pacific snorkeling environments in Central America. Outfitters operate from the Peninsula and from Playas del Coco.

  • Surf Tamarindo and Playa Hermosa

Two of Costa Rica's most-loved Pacific surf breaks, both about an hour south. Tamarindo is the larger, more developed scene; Hermosa is quieter and known for stronger waves.

  • Hike Rincón de la Vieja

An active volcanic park about ninety minutes inland — fumaroles, hot springs, hidden waterfalls, and trails that range from easy loops to a full-day summit climb.

  • Day-trip to Palo Verde National Park

One of Central America's premier wildlife refuges, with boat tours through wetlands that draw crocodiles, iguanas, and hundreds of bird species. Best in dry season when wildlife concentrates near water.

  • Sunset sail in the gulf

The protected waters of the Gulf of Papagayo make for some of Costa Rica's most reliable sunset sailing — calmer than open ocean, with beach club drop-offs at the Peninsula.

When to Visit

  • December — April (Dry season / Peak)

The classic Costa Rica window — dry, sunny, warm, with low humidity. Highest demand and rates. The reason Guanacaste's calendar is what it is.

  • May — July (Green season / Shoulder)

Afternoon showers, lush landscapes, and significantly lower rates. Mornings remain sunny. Many regulars consider this the best-value window.

  • August — September (Quiet)

Wettest months, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Tourist volume drops and rates are at their lowest. Owners who don't mind some weather variability often prefer the privacy.

  • October — November (Transitional)

Trailing edge of green season. Rains taper through November, water remains warm, and the landscape is at its lushest right before peak season returns.

Getting There

Liberia International Airport (LIR) is the gateway, 20–35 minutes from the Peninsula Papagayo. Direct flights from Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Newark, Chicago, and several Canadian hubs. US dollars are accepted alongside Costa Rican colones; English is widely spoken in the resort areas. As a Pacific destination with no Atlantic hurricane exposure, Guanacaste's weather risk profile is materially lower than Caribbean destinations.
